Generic Trailer Conventions

1) Titles are included before the main trailer starts which shows the producers and distributors.

2) They tend to put the release date at the end of the trailer with 'coming soon'.

3) One typical convention is the use of voiceovers.

4) Trailers tend to have very short clips of shots, around 2 seconds long.

5) Most typical camera shots used are close ups to show emotions and long shots to show dramatic scenes and extreme long shots to show the location.

6) The film title generally tends to be at the very end of the trailer.

7) Trailers tend to introduce the main characters in the film without really giving away the storyline.

8) Trailers tend to be the length of around 1 1/2 minutes to 2 minutes.

9) They tend to say what other films the producers have made.

10) Tend to have non diegetic music playing in the background that matches the genre of the film.

11) Don't give the ending away.

12) Don't fully expose the antagonist.

13) Provide details of websites/twitter hash tags to promote the film as a brand.

14) Flashes of the best bits of the film.

15) Use silence to build tension and suspense.
